Dr. Mohidus Samad Khan secures patent for innovative paper-based diagnostic technology
Dr. Mohidus Samad Khan, Associate Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering and his team have secured a Bangladeshi Patent application entitled: “A Device & the Apparatus for (Uric Acid) Analysis of Bio-fluid” (application no. 147/2018, dated 07/06/2018). Recently the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, has officially issued BD Patent Certificate (Patent No.: 1006215, Issue No. 1549, Date 03-03-2021) as the recognition of the successful patent application of the aforementioned innovation work by BUET researchers. The reported technique is an early generation paper-based technique for the qualitative and quantitative detection of uric acid in biofluids. The inception, experimental work, and drafting of the patent work have been solely carried out by the researchers at BUET. The other inventors of this work are Md. Nazibul Islam, Isteque Ahmed, Md. Sakib Ferdous and Muzahidul Islam Anik from the same department. The researchers have already published the scientific content of the research work in the Frontiers in Chemistry, which is available at Developing Paper Based Diagnostic Technique to Detect Uric Acid in Urine. Front. Chem. 6:496. (https://doi.org/10.3389/fchem.2018.00496) Prior to this patent, the research group from BUET has also secured another Bangladeshi Patent entitled: “Low-Cost Paper Diagnostics for the Qualitative and Quantitative Detection of Formaldehyde (Formalin, Primary Aldehyde) in Food, Water and other Biofluids” (Patent No.: 1006040, Issue No. 605, Date 02-09-2019) (inventors: Mohidus Samad Khan, Md. Nazibul Islam and Mehnaz Mursalat).
