During the early days a well-equipped Unit Operations Laboratory served the laboratory requirement of the department. Over the years, new laboratories were setup to keep the teaching in line with the modern development. Currently, the department owns a number of additional laboratories including Corrosion Laboratory, Kinetics Laboratory, Fuel and Petroleum Processing Laboratory, Mass Transfer Laboratory, Particle Technology Laboratory, Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, etc. The department also possesses facilities for research in areas of Reaction Engineering and Oil and Gas Processing. Recently procured equipment and modern facilities for Process Control and Environmental Engineering Laboratories have enabled the department to develop expertise in computer aided process control and air pollution monitoring. The department also has computer facilities equipped with specialized chemical engineering software for the use of undergraduate and post-graduate students.
The departmental library has a good number of recent publications, books and journals in Chemical Engineering and related disciplines and it is considered to be one of the finest departmental libraries in the country. The department regularly publishes Chemical Engineering Research Bulletin for showcasing departmental, national and international research activities in different fields of chemical engineering.
The department has an excellent teaching staff with 10 PhDs. The research interests of the faculties are diversified, which include corrosion engineering, Process Engineering, Energy & Environment, Process Design & Development, Catalysis, Oil & Gas Processing, Air & Water Pollution, Separation Processes, Industrial Safety, Process Control, Polymer, Process Simulation and Environment, Process Modeling and Optimization, etc. Apart from publishing research works regularly in national and international journals the faculty members contributed greatly to chemical engineering education by publishing books in basic and advanced chemical engineering. Two of the faculty members were awarded Ekushey Padak (Dr M. A. Naser, 1987 and Dr. Iqbal Mahmud, 2005), one of the highest civilian awards in Bangladesh, for their outstanding contributions in Education.
The Department has good interaction with Industry and provides services through consultancy projects and continuing education courses in many areas. The faculty members provide consultancy services to the process industries in the fields of corrosion, process safety, process control and to oil and gas sector, cement and ceramic sector, plastic processing industries, environmental pollution management etc. The faculty members also frequently serve as experts in policy-making, investigation and selection committees formed by the Government of Bangladesh dealing with technological issues. The department regularly offers short courses on different topics from time to time to improve the professional skills of engineers and technologists working in industries.
