The Department of Chemical Engineering at BUET has a rich history spanning more than six decades. What began as a modest academic unit within the then East Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology has grown into one of the most respected chemical engineering departments in South Asia - characterized by its commitment to quality education, rigorous research, and service to the nation.
The Department of Chemical Engineering was founded as part of the East Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology (EPUET). The department launched its first batch of B.Sc. Chemical Engineering students with a pioneering faculty, making it one of the earliest engineering departments at the institution.
Through the turbulent period of Bangladesh's War of Independence, the department continued its educational mission. EPUET was renamed Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), and the department re-emerged with renewed commitment to serving the new nation's industrial and engineering needs.
The department launched its M.Sc. Engineering program, enabling postgraduate education and research. This decade saw significant expansion of the faculty body and the establishment of several specialized research laboratories, laying the groundwork for the department's research culture.
A formal Ph.D. program was introduced, alongside increased collaboration with international universities and research institutions. The BRTC (Bureau of Research, Testing and Consultation) began offering professional testing and consultancy services in partnership with the department, extending the department's engagement with industry.
The department underwent significant infrastructure expansion - new laboratory facilities, advanced computing resources, and a thoroughly revised curriculum aligned with international engineering education standards. Formal international partnerships with universities in the USA, UK, Japan, and Australia were established during this period.
Faculty members published research in top-tier international journals across chemical process engineering, environmental engineering, energy, and biochemical engineering. Several externally-funded research projects from the World Bank, UGC, and international agencies were hosted. The department's alumni network expanded to all continents, with graduates in leadership positions at major multinational corporations and research institutions.
The department increased its annual undergraduate intake to 120 students per year - a landmark expansion reflecting both the department's growing capacity and the rising demand for chemical engineers in Bangladesh's rapidly developing industrial sector.
The Academic Council approved a comprehensively updated B.Sc. curriculum in July 2023 - the most thorough revision in the department's history. The new curriculum introduces six specialization tracks (Biochemical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Process Control, Process Safety Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering), aligns with global accreditation frameworks, and introduces 12 formally defined Program Outcomes.
The department embraces digital learning technologies and computational tools. Research focus has expanded to address climate change, renewable energy, process safety, and sustainable manufacturing. Graduating chemical engineers are equipped to address the challenges of the fourth industrial revolution - and continue the legacy of excellence the department has built since 1948.
