The Department of Chemical Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is a pioneer in teaching and research in the field of chemical safety management and process safety in Bangladesh. The Department and Bangladesh National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention (BNACWC) jointly organized the International Symposium on Chemical Safety and Security Management (ISCSSM 2020) on 11-12 February, 2020 with the support of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and Environmental Sustainability in Textile Industries program (ESTex)-BUET to bring together academics, professionals, international bodies, government authorities and industry to promote awareness and share advancements in the field of chemical safety and security, and loss prevention.
The symposium was a unique congregation, an eventful forum where experts specializing in chemical safety and security management discussed in depth the present status and progress in the field of chemical safety and security. More than 150 participants from various sectors including academia (BUET, JUST and SUST), regulatory authorities (DIFE, DoE), ministries (MoC, MoF) and industries (Chevron, KAFCO, Beximco Pharmaceuticals and many others) came together to share their knowledge and ideas.
A group discussion session was conducted in order to gain perspective from the participants. The recommendations and suggestions will be shared with OPCW in Hague in the Netherlands and respective ministries and authorities of Bangladesh.
A poster competition was held on the theme of chemical and process safety where students from various universities of Bangladesh actively participated.
Special memorial tributes and lectures were given honoring one of the most renowned figures in chemical and process safety, the late Dr. M. Sam Mannan.

A Regents professor and holder of the T. Michael O,Connor Chair I at Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering and executive director of Mary Kay’O Connor Process Safety Center at Texas A&M University, Dr. Sam Mannan was a graduate of this department and the inaugural holder of the M A Naser Chair. He was the first pioneer to bring the concept of process safety in Bangladesh. Prof. Sam Mannan was well known, whether it is in China, India, Malaysia, Colombia, Bangladesh, Qatar or the US. He left his footprint everywhere by his effort to change the safety culture all over the world.
Dr. J P GUPTA, distinguished Professor and Head of the Dept. Of Chemical Engineering at Shiv Nadar University, is a well-known in the field of process safety. He was the Founding Director General of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Gandhinagar; and Founding Director of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, Rae Bareli (under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas). He has been bestowed with the Distinguished Alumni Award by the University of Pennsylvania, Trevor Kletz Merit Award by Texas A&M University, The Hutchinson Medal (jointly with David W Edwards) by the Institution of Chemical Engineers UK and IPCL Safety Award by the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers. He has worked closely with Dr. Sam Mannan, and recalled fond memories of his time spent with Dr. Mannan and remembered the contributions that Dr. Mannan made to the field of process safety.
