The 4th International Conference on Chemical Engineering (ICChE 2014),organized by Department of Chemical Engineering was held during 29-30 December, 2014. The conference was focused on general aspects & concerns of Chemical Engineering with a highlight on Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering. The inaugural ceremony was held on 29th December at the Council Bhaban of BUET, which was presided over by the Vice Chancellor of BUET Professor Khaleda Ekram. Prof. A.K Azad Choudhury, Chairman, UGC was present as the Chief Guest and Prof. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, VC University of Asia Pacific was present as the special Guest on that occasion. Professor Dr. Nazmul Karim from Texas A&M University, USA was the invited speaker to share his valuable thoughts on the Chemical Engineering over the time.
More than 50 technical papers from different countries like USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, India and Bangladesh were presented during 11 different sessions. The technical sessions were mainly focused on Food and Biotechnology, Environment, Energy, Material Science, Process modeling and Optimization, and Chemical Engineering Science. Apart from the technical sessions there were two plenary lectures and two key note speeches from distinguished researchers. The plenary lectureswere delivered by Prof. Gil Garnier from Monash University, Australia and Prof. Marvin Slepian from University of Arizona, USA. Prof. Garnier talked about the bio-opportunities for the new world and Prof. Slepian shared his views on the role of innovation in the advancement of medicine, society and medical devices. Two key note lectures were delivered by Prof. Saad khan from North Carolina State University, USA and Prof. Iqbal Mujtaba from Bradford University, UK. Dr. Khan shared his research on functional nanofibres as biocatalysts and in drug delivery, and Dr. Mujtaba shed light on the state of the art in model based seawater desalination process.
The closing ceremony was held on December 30, 2014 with invited lectures by Prof. Samsuddin Illias, North Carolina A&T University, USA and Prof. Emeritus Iqbal Mahmud, BUET. The closing ceremony was adorned by the presence of Chair of closing session Professor Dil Afroza Begum. Eng. Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, MP, Honourable Minister of Expatriates’ & Overseas Employment, Peoples Republic of Bangladesh was present as the Chief Guest. The Vice Chancellor of BUET Professor Khaleda Ekram was the Special Guest. Dr. Mohidus Samad Khan, Member Secretary of ICChE 2014, presented the synopsis of the conference. The closing remarks and the Vote of thanks were delivered by the Head of Chemical Engineering Department, Prof. M.A.A. Shoukat Choudhury and the Chairman of ICChE 2014 Professor Dil Afroza Begum, respectively.
